Carnwath Farms

The Wappinger, a tribe of the Algonquin Language group, lived in the Eastern Woodland Area. Wappani, as they were called, translates to “man of the east,” they were part of the Lenape tribe, also known as the Delaware. The Mohicans, another tribe of the Algonquin Language Group would come and live with the Wappani along the Wappingers Creek, known to the Wappani as Mawenawasic, likely reflected the meandering nature of the creek or its usefulness for travel and fishing.
